¿Como definiriamos a Rush?
Rush es una banda de hard rock y Rock progresivo de origen canadiense compuesta por el bajista, teclista y vocalista Geddy Lee (originalmente Gary Lee Weinrib), el guitarrista Alex Lifeson (originalmente Alex Zivojinovich) y el baterista Neil Peart. Grabaron su primer álbum en 1974. La banda se formó en octubre de 1968, en Sarnia, Ontario, por Lifeson, Lee y John Rutsey. Pronto se mudaron a Toronto para mejorar su carrera. Peart reemplazó a Rutsey en la batería en 1974 para completar la formación actual.
Rush ha sido merecedor del Premio Juno (equivalente canadiense de los Grammy) en varias ocasiones. Además, Lee, Lifeson, y Peart han sido declarados como Oficiales de la Orden de Canadá.

Historia
Sus origenes
Con el paso del tiempo, el estilo musical de Rush ha cambiado bastante. Su álbum de debut es algo similar a la banda de rock británica Led Zeppelin, pero a través de los primeros discos su estilo evolucionó, influenciado por el movimiento británico de rock progresivo en particular, pero manteniendo el rock pesado como núcleo de su sonido.
La alineación original de Rush se formó en septiembre de 1968, por Jeff Jones (bajista y vocalista), John Rutsey (batería y coros) y Alex Zivojinovich, mejor conocido como Alex Lifeson (guitarrista y coros). El hermano mayor de Rutsey sugirió el nombre Rush. Ese mismo mes, Jones fue reemplazado por el amigo de Lifeson, Gary Lee Weinrib, quien adoptó el nombre de Geddy Lee. Después de unos cambios de personal en los años siguientes, Lee, Lifeson, y Rutsey se reunieron como Rush y lanzaron su primer álbum en 1974, titulado simplemente Rush. Muy semejante en sonoridad al estilo de Led Zeppelin, aunque mas rocanrrolero. Rush tuvo fama local limitada hasta que su lanzamiento original, distribuido por Moon Records, fue recogido por una estación de radio de Cleveland. Esta popularidad llevó a que el album fuera redistribuido por Mercury Records, la disquera de Rush hasta 1987.

Ese mismo año, Rutsey renunció debido a problemas de salud y un disgusto por las giras. Rush comenzó a audicionar un reemplazo y terminaron seleccionando a Neil Peart, quien llevó a Rush por un camino más progresivo a través de los próximos discos, Fly by Night, Caress of Steel y el album conceptual 2112. La lírica en ese tiempo fue más densa y era muy influenciada por poesía clásica y literatura de ciencia ficción y, en algunos casos, los escritos y filosofía de Ayn Rand, como se evidencia más claramente en la canción "Anthem" (basada en una novela de Rand) y el album 2112.
Muchas de sus primeras canciones recibieron poca exposición debido a su larga duración (en algunos casos más de 10 minutos). Una notable excepción fue "Closer to the Heart" (de 3 minutos) de su album A Farewell to Kings (1977), que se escuchó ampliamente en la radio y convirtiendose posteriormente en la cancion emblematica de la banda canadiense. También de A Farewell to Kings, "Xanadu" (una de las ya mencionadas canciones de 10 minutos) se convirtió en una favorita de los fanáticos.
En 1978 el álbum Hemispheres seguiría el estilo de rock progresivo, incluyendo una segunda parte a la canción "Cygnus X-1". Aunque Rush seguiría produciendo otras canciones capitulares durante su carrera, "Hemispheres" fue su último épico.

Rush en los 80: Cambios en el estilo
Al entrar a una nueva década, Rush comenzó a disponer de sus estilos viejos a favor de un estilo más corto, y unos arreglos más suaves (que algunos consideran estériles). El álbum Permanent Waves (1980) cambió el estilo musical de Rush drásticamente. Rush sentía que habían llevado el formato de canciones largas tan lejos como podían o querían, y optaron por canciones más cortas que retuvieran su tradicional complejidad y eficiencia musical. Aunque todavía era evidente un estilo de rock pesado, se introdujeron más teclados. Los temas de su lírica cambiaron marcadamente, dependiendo menos en imágenes de ciencia-ficción. Otros estilos, como reggae y new wave se colaban en las canciones de Rush a principios de la década.
Las canciones largas si tuvieron apariciones en este período, con ejemplos como "Jacob's Ladder", "Natural Science" y "The Camera Eye". Aún así, muchas de las canciones de la banda tenían una duración de 5 a 6 minutos, lo que aún esta fuera de lo convencional y acostumbrado en el mercado.

Rush en el cenit del éxito
A pesar de estas "limitaciones" para la radio en la duración de sus canciones, Rush recibió tuvo mucha repercusión en emisoras de radio de rock a principios de los 80, gracias al éxito de algunas de las canciones más cortas y populares. Como resultado, Permanent Waves llegó al Top 10 del Billboard y alcanzó el platino. Una canción en particular, "The Spirit of Radio" (llamada así en honor a una exitosa estación de radio de Toronto, CFNY), pasó a ser un éxito en la radio y el mercado.
La popularidad de Rush alcanzó su cenit con el álbum Moving Pictures en 1981. La primera canción, "Tom Sawyer", es una de las canciones más conocidas de la banda, y Geddy Lee la califica como la canción tradicional de Rush. Moving Pictures se disparó a la posición # 3 en el Billboard y ha sido certificado cuádruple-platino por la RIAA. "Tom Sawyer" aún se escucha en estaciones de rock clásico con frecuencia. Aun así, no hay que dejar de lado éxitos tales como "Red Barchetta", "Limelight" y "YYZ", cuyo título deriva de la sigla internacional que identifica al aeropuerto de Toronto, y el ritmo de la misma esta determinado por el ritmo emitido de estas letras en codigo Morse.
El período de los teclados
Desde ese punto, sus álbumes de los 80 incorporaron más teclados y se apegaron más al estilo que comenzó con Permanent Waves, de manera que sus álbumes a finales de los 80 y a principios de los 90 son muy diferentes a sus primeros trabajos. Power Windows (1985) y Hold your Fire (1987) pueden ser considerados como picos en este capítulo de Rush.
Dicho apego a los teclados sincronizados no estuvo excento de conflictos dentro de la banda. Alex Lifeson y su guitarra quedaron postrados a un segundo plano, ya que el registro de los teclados es muy similar al de la guitarra, lo que le resto importancia a su aporte ritmico.
Rush se comenzó a apartar de este estilo con sus álbumes Presto y Roll the Bones. En todo esto, Neil Peart se mantenía como el escritor principal mientras que Alex Lifeson y Geddy Lee componían la música. Luego del "período de teclados" de 1982 a 1991, la banda abandonó los sonidos de teclados de sus grabaciones de estudio en favor de un estilo más pesado y dominado por guitarras, adaptando sus canciones a sonidos más orgánicos, cuerdas y órgano. Esta transición comenzó con el álbum Counterparts en 1993.
La tragedia ataca a Rush
Después del álbum Test for Echo (1996), la banda entró en un receso de seis años, debido mayormente a tragedias personales en la vida de Peart. La hija de Peart, Selena, murió en un accidente automovilístico en agosto de 1997, seguido de la muerte de su esposa Jacqueline, a causa de cáncer, en junio de 1998. Peart se adentró en un proceso de restauración que el mismo llamó "una travesía sanadora" en motocicleta en donde viajó miles de kilómetros a través de Norteamérica. Más adelante escribió sobre su viaje en un libro llamado Ghost Rider: Travels on the Healing Road. La banda ha revelado que estuvieron muy cerca de separarse durante este período.
Rush contraataca
La banda regresó en 2002 con el album Vapor Trails. Este álbum resultó ser pesado y moderno. Incluía la canción "Ghost Rider", basada en la ya mencionada travesía de Peart. El 11 de septiembre también es mencionado en la canción "Peaceable Kingdom". El álbum debutó con muy buenas críticas y fue acompañado de la primera gira de la banda en seis años, incluyendo conciertos en Ciudad de México y Río de Janeiro, donde tocaron a algunas de las multitudes más grandes de su carrera. Sin embargo, la controversia rodeó el álbum de Vapor Trails por su mezcla tan pesada, dividiendo a los fanáticos, y se tiene en mente una remasterización para 2006.
Para celebrar su trigésimo aniversario, en junio del 2004 lanzaron Feedback, un disco conteniendo ocho covers de bandas tales como Cream, The Who y The Yardbirds, bandas a quienes los miembros de Rush citan como inspiración en sus inicios. Este es el segundo disco oficial de la banda con covers de otros artistas, siendo el primero un cover del año 1973 de Buddy Holly, llamado Not Fade Away. El mismo verano de 2004, Rush inició la exitosa gira del Trigésimo Aniversario, tocando en Estado Unidos, Canada, Reino Unido, Alemania, Italia, Suecia, República Checa, y Holanda. El 24 de setiembre de 2004 en Frankfurt, Alemania, el concierto fue grabado en DVD (titulado R30: Live in Frankfurt), lanzado al mercado el 22 de Noviembre del 2005.
Un nuevo DVD box set, llamado Rush Replay X 3, fue lanzado el 13 de junio del 2006, el que consiste en tres grabaciones originales de las giras respectivas de Exit...Stage Left, Grace Under Pressure y A Show of Hands, remasterizadas todas para DVD. Tambien incluido hay un CD del disco Grace Under Pressure.
